The paint was dry but behind the scenes we still had lots of sorting and tidying to do, and there were more to-do lists than days in the week… but the gallery was open, and full of life from the start, with private views from friends, supporters of the gallery and for the guest artists and makers. Since then we have welcomed Marina residents, visitors to Brighton, artists, makers, and friends (old and new) into the space — some came out of curiosity, (or the prosecco!) and others because they already knew how much Brighton Marina needed a place like this.
As part of the Artists Open Houses trail, we showcased work from a wonderful group of 10 artists and makers — including a few who had never exhibited before. Seeing people stop, linger, and connect with the art was a real joy. Some artists did very well and we have learnt we are never right in guessing which art a potential customer will love. For many, it wasn’t just about buying or browsing — it was about belonging to something creative.
We are already known for our dog water bowl – freshly cleaned and filled each day, and for the ginormous dog treats. A few of the residents are regulars and pop in to say hello every time they head to Asda, (or Asbos, as one refined lady likes’ to call it)
And now the Artists Open Houses is over, we’re moving into the next chapter.
Our upcoming New Beginnings exhibition officially opens on 5th July, but we’re in contact with some of the shortlisted artists and inviting them to display early to make the transition seamless — keeping the energy going without disrupting workshops or classes.
As we shift from being an ‘Open House’ to a permanent gallery, there’s a quiet sense of pride (and maybe relief!) in having made it through those first chaotic weeks. There’s also a huge amount of gratitude to everyone who visited, cheered us on, or just told a friend.
This is only the start — and we’re so glad you’re here for it.
