Wool Landscapes: A Beginner’s Needle Felting Workshop

Discover the art of painting with wool
This hands-on workshop is perfect for beginners and anyone curious about needle felting (also known as dry felting). Using simple tools and beautifully soft fibres, you’ll learn how to build up a flat (2D) felted scene — whether that’s a landscape, seascape abstract design, or something more illustrative.
Needle felting is a wonderfully tactile process, where loose fibres are shaped and bonded together using a special barbed needle. It’s both calming and surprisingly versatile.
What you’ll explore
You’ll start with an introduction to the materials and tools, including how to safely and effectively use felting needles. From there, you’ll build your skills step by step, covering:
- How to use felting needles correctly and safely
- The different types of needles and what they’re used for
- Choosing and working with different wools and fibres
- Building a base and preparing your backing fabric
- Blending colours to create soft transitions and depth
- Layering fibres to create texture and form
- Adding detail to bring your scene to life
You’ll be guided through the process, with demonstrations and plenty of time to practise and experiment.
What you’ll leave with
By the end of the session, you’ll have your own finished felted artwork mounted on backing — ready to frame or display — along with the skills to continue exploring dry felting at home.
