Lunchtime play in Brighton: the Art of Suminagashi Marbling

Discover the mesmerising art of Suminagashi, the traditional Japanese technique of floating ink on water to create beautiful marbled patterns.

In this relaxed 90-minute creative play session, you’ll learn how to create delicate swirling designs by gently dropping ink onto the surface of water and guiding the patterns into unique shapes. Each print is completely one of a kind, making the process as magical as the finished results.

Experiment with different effects, create a collection of marbled papers, and discover how this centuries-old technique combines creativity, mindfulness and a little bit of unpredictability.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Create floating ink patterns on water
  • Manipulate swirls and organic designs
  • Transfer marbled patterns onto paper
  • Experiment with different effects and compositions
  • Produce unique prints that can be used in future creative projects

You’ll take home:

A selection of your own Suminagashi marbled papers, perfect for framing, card making, bookbinding, collage, journaling or other creative projects.

This session is suitable for complete beginners and anyone who enjoys experimenting with colour, pattern and process.

All materials provided.
